Environment: awareness on the role of media |

Thirty Mauritanian journalists took part Thursday in Nouakchott, a day of awareness on the role of media in preserving the environment. The meeting was organized by the Ministry Delegate to the Prime Minister for the Environment in collaboration with the Union of Independent Journalists and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNDP). Speaking at the occasion, the legal adviser to the Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister for the Environment, Mr. Hamoud Ould Sid'Ahmed, said that this day is part of activities organized for journalists on issues crippling development, including environmental phenomena. He added that the imbalance of the environment requires the deployment of great efforts through awareness around the dangers of pollution. For his part, Secretary General of Union of Independent Journalists, Mr. Ahmedou Ould Yahi, said that the workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of journalists in protecting the environment and their awareness their role. For its part, the UNDP representative, Mr. Bâ Sidi Moussa said that the workshop comes within the framework of partnership between the Programme, the Union of Independent nalists ¬ days and the ministry. He recalled that Mauritania had been placed 131st with the classification covered 133 countries and stressed that natural resources account for 64% of the national economy. These resources, including fisheries, agriculture and livestock are exposed to many dangers including desertification, "he explained.
